Barkhamsted is a town in Litchfield County, Connecticut and contains two villages, Pleasant Valley and Riverton. The town has a total area of 38.8 square miles (100.6 km²), of which 36.2 square miles (93.8 km²) is land and 2.6 square miles (6.8 km²) of it (6.72%) is water. A high percentage of the land in the town is owned by the State of Connecticut as state forest (People's State Forest and American Legion State Forest) and by the Metropolitan District Commission as watershed land. Major bodies of water include the Barkhamsted Reservoir, Lake McDonough, and the Farmington River.

As of 2014, there were 3,749 people, 1,475 households, and 1,561 total housing units in the town. The population density was 103 people per square mile.  The average density of housing units was 41.0/sq. mi.  The racial makeup of the town was 98.4% White, 0.03% African American, 0% Native American, 0.56% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.75% of the population. 

Of the occupied households counted in the 2010 census, 33.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them. In the town, the population was spread out with 16.0% under the age of 14, 12.0% from 14 to 24, 22.0% from 25 to 44, 36.0% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. The town is 50.9% male, and of the total population, 64.7% are married.

The median family size is 32, and the median per capita income in the town was $40,156, and the median income for a family was $81,792. About 1.5% of the population was below the poverty line.  The educational attainment for the population was 27% high school graduates, 10% had associate degrees and 45% had a Bachelor degrees or higher.The median house or condo value is approximately $260,000
